By Keys standards, Duck Key is a relatively new town,
developed in large part as a result of Duck Key island’s purchase by Bryan Newkirk
in 1956. An international financier and mining executive, Newkirk and his Duck Key real
estate investment partners set out to develop a 400 acre, upscale Florida Keys island real
estate community with such amenities as a yacht harbor and club, Duck Key golf course,
tennis courts, and more. An improved entry causeway was built; interconnecting canals
served as landfill. In the end, 5 Duck Key islands were created: Indies, Centre, Harbour,
Plantation and Yacht Club.
Duck Key Florida was sold in the early
1980’s, and the Hawk’s Cay Resort and Village were developed. In addition to
extensive tourist, recreational and convention facilities, there are some 400 homes on
Duck Key today. The Duck Key real estate community is internally connected by 4 bridges,
10 miles of paved road, and boasts more than 10 miles of Duck Key water front real estate
throughout Duck Key in the Florida Keys.
